CENTRAL FOYER OF
BREMEN UNIVERSITY

CENTRAL FOYER OF BREMEN UNIVERSITY Photo by Andreas Keller, Altdorf
The central foyer of Bremen University has been roofed with a filigree-like steel/glass structure. All four elevations and the entire roof area of the entrance hall are glazed. The hall, which adjoins existing buildings on two sides, is 15m high and has plan dimensions of 22m by 43.5m. The roof support structure is carried by 6 vee-supports in the foyer area and a further six supports on the existing building.
The necessary stiffening of the system is achieved by stabilizing the outer two vee-supports by means of cables and by cross-bracing the pivoted columns. The elevations of the hall feature 39 vertical and equally spaced cables running between the edge of the roof and ground level; these are the only primary load-bearing elements of the façade. Under gale force wind loads this cable-supported façade is capable of being safely moved by up to 35cm.

The glazing of the façade consists of 10 or 12mm thick standard safety glass panels (measuring approximately 1.8 by 0.9m) which are clamped at four points. The areas of transition between the flexible and moving façade and the rigid corner structures or existing buildings, were realized by means of glass fins. In this way the façade can move freely along a defined transition zone without creating open joints.
