Burda Multi-storey Car Park
A circular multi-storied parking garage of 60m in diameter was constructed in the immediate vicinity of the new complex. The central area contains the access ramps for cars as well as the pedestrian access facilities. The five levels provide parking spaces for 474 cars.
Apart from the unusual façade design, it is the compactness of this naturally ventilated parking garage that deserves to be noted. The car deck floors themselves were constructed from prefabricated reinforced concrete elements. Thanks to the use of modular elements, construction time and cost were minimized without compromising the architectural quality of the building.
The semi-transparent rope façade envelops the building like a veil. It consists of prefabricated vertical rope elements to which lengths of round timber are fixed by means of standardized holders. The holders are stamped and fabricated from stainless steel sheet material and clamped to the vertical ropes by machine. At the level of each deck floor the ropes are stabilized horizontally by articulated stays, which reduce the deformation of the façade under wind pressure.
The pergola was constructed in analogy to the façade, the individual ropes being tensioned between the reinforced concrete core and the outer compression ring. Two additional steel rings, which also serve to carry the lighting, structurally stabilize the dynamic deformation of the system.

Interbank Lima
Latin America's biggest private bank, the Interbank, called on the architect Hans Hollein from Vienna to plan a new building for its administrative offices in Lima. The external skin of this reinforced concrete building, which is 87m high, has 22 storeys and is crescent-shaped in plan view, consists of simple glass façades extending on each level from floor to ceiling. A metal grid fabricated from 50mm diameter titanium pipe was suspended in front of the glass façade. The total length of titanium pipe used is approximately 27km.
