The roof of the Rothenbaum Center Court covers spectatorsˇ« stands and playing arena in a free span of c. 102m. The roof structure, which is based on the spoked wheel, comprises a permanently covered outer area as well as a convertible inner area of approximately 63m in diameter, which represents an opening roof area of 3000m2. The inner roof can be opened or closed within a few minutes without interfering with the match in progress.
The roof skin is formed by two pre-stressed PVC-coated polyester fabric membranes, which are integrated into the primary system. Both membranes lie in the plane of the lower cable spokes. The outer membrane forms the permanent roof, while the inner membrane forms the convertible roof. The inner membrane may be reefed towards the central hub. Because of the different pitches of the roof areas, rainwater will flow towards the boundary between the two membranes when the roof is shut.
